Discovering Algarve Wine
For wine enthusiasts, taste is key,
and there are rules to follow to ensure the notes of each bottle aren't
compromised. Before exploring the Algarve's wineries, take note of some of
these guidelines and embark on your wine-tasting journey with even greater
knowledge for a more enriching experience.
Does the wine glass make a
difference?
The right glass is essential for
enjoying wine to its fullest. For a complete tasting experience, always choose
the appropriate glasses. The size, shape, and stem are all carefully designed
in wine glasses to enhance the wine's qualities.
The complexity and intensity of
aromas can vary depending on the glass used. Start with the basics: the glass
should be clear to appreciate the wine's colour and have a thin rim. As for the
material, opt for crystal over glass. The crystal, being thinner and more
porous, allows the wine to swirl and concentrate its molecules on the glass
walls, enhancing the aromas.

Wine Regions of Portugal
Portugal is home to 14 distinct wine
regions, each offering wines with unique characteristics. These regions,
including Madeira and the Azores, form the fourth-largest vineyard area in
Europe, utilising 343 different grape varieties for wine production. Of these,
149 are used for white wine and 194 for red. Impressively, around 260 of these
varieties are native to Portugal, known as autochthonous grapes. Notable
examples include Alvarinho, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, and the Negra Mole
variety stands out in the Algarve.
Portuguese wines are classified by
labels such as IG (Geographical Indication), DOC (Denomination of Controlled
Origin), or table wines, which do not carry these classifications.
Wine Regions of Portugal: Vinho Verde,
Trás-os-Montes, Douro, Távora-Varosa, Dão, Bairrada, Beira Interior, Lisbon,
Tejo, Setúbal Peninsula, Alentejo, Algarve, Madeira, and the Azores.
Portuguese Wine Profiles
Portugal's diverse wine regions
produce world-renowned wines, each with distinct characteristics. These regions
can be categorised into three climatic and geographical profiles: Atlantic,
Mountainous or Continental, and Mediterranean or Plain.
Atlantic Terroir Profile: This profile is
characterised by fresh winds, moderate humidity, and occasional cloudiness. The
sandy, fertile soil allows the grapes to mature more slowly.
Mountainous or Continental Terroir
Profile:
The soil is primarily granite and schist, typically found in riverine areas.
The climate features a wide temperature range with light to moderate rainfall.

At Monte da Casteleja, old-fashioned
wine production is the guiding principle for this family, who continue their
grandfather's dream of creating undeniably high-quality wines. Since 2002, the
grapes have been hand-selected and harvested, traditionally crushed using only
human strength and teamwork, without the use of machinery.
In addition to preserving ancient
techniques, the wine stands out for its organic production, benefiting from a
unique terroir with clay-limestone soil. Rainwater collected during the winter
is stored, providing the necessary hydration for the vines in the summer.
