Ponta da Piedade underwent a refurbishment, and currently, visitors can appreciate the beauty of this iconic spot by walking along the boardwalk, which has recently been expanded.

It is one of the unique areas along the Portuguese coast and the most frequented in Lagos. Due to the beauty of its unusual rock formations, hidden caves that harbour marine life, and the golden hue of the rocks standing out from the turquoise waters, this is indeed an unmissable spot for guests of the Belmar Spa & Beach Resort.

Recent interventions at Ponta da Piedade now provide a more comprehensive experience, allowing visitors to stroll along the boardwalks and soak in tranquillity at new viewpoints strategically placed along the way. This boardwalk not only takes visitors to the area of the rock formations but also leads to Praia da Batata, passing by the beautiful Praia do Camilo, Praia D. Ana and Praia do Pinhão. If you haven't explored Ponta da Piedade yet, this is the perfect excuse to do so!

Adjacent to Ponta da Piedade is the lighthouse of the same name, a man-made work of art. It commenced operations on July 1, 1913, with an oil lamp as a light source communicating with boats. It was electrified in the 1950s and fully automated in 1983, eliminating the need for constant human presence. The Ponta da Piedade lighthouse stands at an altitude of 51 meters relative to the average sea level.

Near the lighthouse, there is a vast staircase descending to sea level. It's not a beach, as it lacks sand, and swimming is not safe due to the proximity of rocks and various tourist boats. However, here you can contemplate the rocks and the sea up close, identifying curious names given by fishermen, such as the “kissing couple”, the “elephant”, or the “camel's head”.

When to visit Ponta da Piedade?

There are specific moments of the day that we highly recommend for a visit to Ponta da Piedade. This location becomes truly magical at sunrise and sunset. During busy seasons, like summer, the area can get quite crowded; however, you'll manage to find a spot to sit and appreciate the natural beauty at these times of the day. The sun sets in the west, towards Sagres, and from Ponta da Piedade, it's not possible to see the sun touch the water. Nevertheless, the colours of the sky and the overall atmosphere are undoubtedly worth the visit.

Take the opportunity to have a picnic—bring breakfast if you're watching the sunrise or some snacks and drinks to enjoy the sunset.

Explore on foot the new boardwalk from Lagos and discover the wonders of Ponta da Piedade, Camilo Beach with its impressive staircase, the award-winning Dona Ana Beach, the discreet but unique Pinhão Beach, hiding a unique beauty among the rocks, and, finally, the Batata beach near Lagos historic centre.
